COMPETITIVE HUNTS...WHAT ARE THEY? HOW DO THEY WORK?
Competitive treasure hunting is a fast action hunt where an open area is roped off and the person in charge (hunt master) stands in the middle of the field and the contestants are lined up around the perimeter with searchcoils held up in the air. At a given signal, everybody rushes forward swinging with a rapid pace. Speed is critical in that to get the most out of a session (you have 30 minutes) you must pinpoint and retrieve the coins with the greatest of efficiency. There are also tokens planted which are good for various prizes like silver rounds, small gold coins, metal detector accessories and even new detectors. Over the course of any given year, there are several hunts conducted over the course of a weekend. Then, once a year, a week long event known as Treasure Week. This event is largely attended with three hunts per day. The first hunt of the day is held at 10 am. The second hunt is held at 1 pm with the last hunt of the day at 3pm. This hunt used to be held in Indiana but now it is permanently based in Shreve, Ohio at Whispering Hills Campground. The entry fee for the entire 8 days is $200.00 You also have the option to pay for any number of days at $25.00/day. There are also a series of special hunts which offer gold coins based upon the number of tokens picked up over the course of the week with the hunter with the most tokens winning the grand prize. Each evening, there is a special event like chinese auction, bingo, seminars held between the hunts, and a flea market where individual vendors have coins metal detectors books and other items up for sale. The campgrounds itself has a swimming pool, a restaurant, a camp store a fishing lake across the road and plenty of sites to set up camp.(some primitive and some with electric hookups for RV's. All in all, there is a good time in store for one and all. So, keep watching this blog for further information regarding the dates of this event (usually the second week in July). Thanks for looking and come back and visit often.
